When I traveled through Slovenia in 2013, I couldn't miss visiting the glass-enclosed Josip Pelikan photo studio in Celje during one of my trips.

Josip Pelikan Studio Celje

Pinhole – Photo Pelikan by Jan Kratochvíl, 2013

For a tour Pelikan photo studio I made an agreement with my friend. By Borut Peterlin.
It was a good opportunity to meet him in this studio, where he takes portraits. Borut is a well-known Slovenian photographer who has been working as a photographer for more than twenty years. His specialization in recent years has been mainly in the field of analog photography. He works mainly with wet collodion negative and positive processes. Since I also photograph with this process, we always have a common theme. But back to the Pelikan studio and Mr. Josip.

Josip Pelikan was a prominent Slovenian photographer who lived in the 19th century. He lived to a ripe old age, dying in 1977 at the age of 91. You can still meet him when wandering around the city of Celje. Not in person, because Mr. Pelikan is unfortunately no longer alive, but the city Celje lives on in his legacy. You can learn about him at the city cultural center, you can book a tour of his studio, or you can discover his statue by chance, as happened to me. Brief information about Josip Pelikan in Czech can be found on the Seidel studio website here .

When we arrived at the studio, I was struck, as always, by the beautiful space illuminated by the natural world. Glass studios look special in themselves. They are full of light and directly force the photographer to create there. At least that's how I perceive it.

As a memento, we at least took a documentary portrait together using the self-timer on my digital SLR camera.

Below is a video from Boruto's photoshoot at wet collodion in the studio Pelican in Celje. I recommend a visit to this place to anyone interested in photography and its history.

My visit in the skylight photographic studio Josip Pelican in Celje, Slovenia

Josip Pelikan Studio Celje

I have made one pinhole pictures of the Pelikan Studio.

When I traveled in the year 2013 through Slovenia I had a great opportunity to visit the historical photography glass Pelikan studio in Celje.
I met there my friend Borut Peterlin who is a professional Slovenian photographer. It was an honor to visit the studio with him. Borut works mostly with analogue cameras and is a master of the wet plate collodion process. I have attended Borut's wet plate collodion workshop and also work with wet plate collodion process.

The Pelikan studio has its well-known history and is now partially used as an exhibition room and also for photography sessions.
Borut showed me that very nice glass studio. He personally performs portrait sessions on wet plate collodion plates in the Pelikan studio.

We have documented our meeting on my digital camera. It was so pleasant to feel the historic atmosphere there. I thought how many people were here to have a portrait.

The Josip Pelikan Studio in Celje is similar to the Seidel skylight studio in Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic.
